Aviatrix; girl hero

Beryl Markham, where did you find the

                     velocity

to fly in the face of ordinary?

          1920’s girl, no…woman,

              a real barnstormer.

               Triple Crown winner,

                       spinner

with whip and spur to win the Derby

          in 1921! A gutsy one,

                a real daddy’s girl.

Beryl Markham, where did you find the

                       courage

to trust your body; flesh and bone

                 to a thousand and one

                  upturned breaths?

  1. This is really nice I especially loved the last two lines it made me imagine the power of the horse underneath her. Well done sis

    1. Thank you. She was also the first woman to fly solo, non-stop across the Atlantic. She flew from Britain to North America. Her memoir, West with the Night is beautifully written. In fact, I believe Ernest Hemingway remarked that her prose made him feel like an amateur.
